National Navigation Award Scheme courses

The National Navigation Award Scheme is a great way to develop your map reading skills and enjoy the countryside, while knowing that you are working to a nationally validated standard.

There are three levels, and I can offer courses for the first two: Bronze and Silver:

Bronze

Aimed at beginners to navigation in the countryside. Using paths, tracks and other linear features, we will cover basic map interpretation and compass work. This course lasts 2 days or 4 evenings. including assessment.

Silver

More advanced navigation in the countryside building on the skills acquired at the Bronze level and adding the skills required to navigate to features and places some distance from paths and tracks. We will use more accurate compass work and teach you to use appropriate navigation techniques to go cross-country. This course lasts for 2 days including assessment.

To find out more about the courses, please contact me. You can check the calendar on this website to find out when the next course is planned for.

Please note that these awards are not leadership qualifications of any kind.

(Go back to Learn to read maps and navigate in the outdoors.)

Where do the courses take place?

Bronze and Silver courses usually take place around Mugdock, Fintry and the Campsie Fells, north of Glasgow, and also sometimes in the Arrochar area.  If your group has a preference for a different area or location, then please get in touch to discuss your requirements.

What do I need to bring?

You will need stout footwear, waterproofs and your lunch, plus any other bits and pieces you need to keep you comfortable for a day's walk in the countryside. It is a good idea to bring a map case with you as well. Ortlieb or similar flexible map cases are good.

Will I need my own compass and map?

It is best if you can bring your own compass, although I do have spares. I can supply all maps needed, but if you have your own then please bring it along.

What sort of compass do you recommend?

A compass with a long base plate and romers of different scales is best. Silva Ranger 3 or Explorer 4, Recta 200 or Suunto A-20 are all good.
